Sand Casting

Sand casting is a very economical way to produce large parts. A wooden or resin pattern is used to create an impression of the part to be produced in the sand. This is typically done using a two-part mold, the cope, which is the top, and the drag, which is the bottom. The pattern is placed in the drag, which is partially full of sand; the cope is attached and filled with sand, which is then compressed. Once the sand is compressed the cope is removed from the drag and the pattern is removed. A system of sprues and runners form the gating system, which is supported by risers, which reduces porosity by feeding the system as solidification produces shrinkage, and vents to allow the escape of gases including the air which is displaced by the metal.
